Sometimes one comes up with an idea but it is somewhat half-baked. In other words, you don't have all the pieces worked out yet. If left to our own devices, we tend to say "oh well" and go about our daily lives, letting that wonderful idea die on the vine.
At Rhino, I am blessed to have a great team of very highly motivated, creative people who make running this company a pleasure. I took a recent idea of mine to move our web-site to a WordPress platform to my team and immediately, the ideas began to flow.
We are working on using a domain name and site I purchased years ago as the home of this new web-site and with a few prompts from me, my team sprang into action. Inside of 30 minutes we have the basic skeleton of a web-site put up and were having rapid, high-speed conversations about all the ways we could use our new web presence to enhance our brand and drive clients to our content.
I am excitedly waiting for the final version of the web-site to go live so I can announce it to you all.
Please stay tuned in the next few weeks....we will have a whole new look and lots of new functionality coming on line.

Great Fund Raiser for a Wonderful Cause!!
This past weekend, we had a wonderful time at the First Annual H2open Doors CWENCH party (https://www.facebook.com/H2Opendoors?fref=ts) and we raised $100,000 to help us purchase and ship 2 Sunspring (http://www.innovativeh2o.com/productSunspring.htm) units to two Refugee camps on Northern Thailand (http://h2opendoors.org/3/miscellaneous21.htm). Thanks to everyone who joined us. We are now looking forward to changing a few thousand lives for good!

It's Baaaaacckkkkkkk!!!.....
Just before the end of 2001, the Silicon Valley was still in the throes the "DotCom" Boom. The pace of things was crazy and "Real Time" was just not fast enough. I don't think I need to recount what followed for the next 7+ years.
That having been said, it is once again time to put your running shoes on my friends! The VCs have been quietly funding companies over the past few years that actually showed the potential of generating no only revenue, but (dare I say it?) PROFITS!
Many of those companies have come out of stealth mode recently and everyone is running like mad!
The question is, are you and your company ready to provide all of these folks the products and services they need now and over the next few years? Are you ramped up? Do you have the right customer service philosophy?
I have noticed that folks are not afraid to pay a little more for something if it is accompanied by amazing customer service. Do yo see your clients as a means to an end or as your partners in growth? Your answer to this question will largely determine your success in this new round of prosperity.
Time for a little introspection!

Oh Jelly Bean, Thou Hast Hidden the Furniture!

Where is technology going?
As long as mankind has conceived of, designed and invented new technologies, the perrenial question has always been: "What's next?"
From our current vantage point in the first decade of the 21st century, it seems the pervasive and ever increasing demand from technology users is going to be "I want everything everywhere." This means, we will want our news, personal information, interpersonal contacts, perferrences, work, etc. to follow us wherever we go.
This sort of "Me-Computing" will become easier and easier the more enmeshed and available access to data networks become. Much of this computing will eventually be done on portable, highly powerful hand-held devices that allow us to do whatever we want, wherever we want.
Leading the charge to this lofty goal is a company we at Rhino are proud to be associated and partnered with. The company is Deskstream and is dedicated to creating a means by which the end-users can get their Microsoft Windows desktop environment anywhere on any machine!
With a single point management interface for the system, a company (or school or non-profit organization) can literally put all their "desktops" into the cloud (whether private or public) and allow the end-users to access their data and work-space from any machine in the world.
Thus an IT manager can give their company CEO a simple laptop with a button on the desktop that points to his/her desktop environment back at the company and they can do everything they need to do while travelling. If, by chance, the laptop is left in a taxi somewhere, no real data is lost or compromised.
If need be, the end-user's desktop environment can even be encoded on to a USB memory stick that can be used while travelling. When the end-user returns to company headquarters, all of his/her changes will be automatically synched to the back-end thus ensuring data continuity.
This is the kind of game-changing technology that you can expect to come down the pike in the next few years. Along with this, of-course, all of your house-hold devices will become more intelligent and more communicative.
The only real question here is, are you ready? The old saw of "I'm not too technical" will no longer be valid. As we progress in our society, the people who succeed will be the people who take the time to understand technology, its implications and applications and leverage it to their benefit. Those who do not will be left behind.
At no point in our history has the ability to understand and adopt technology been more crucial to the quality of life than today. Are you ready for the even braver, faster, more connected new world coming up?

Lack of Technical Knowlege Can Be Harmful to Business Owners
I know it may seem I am banging this gong over and over again, but just this week, I have had issues with a couple of customers for whom the lack of technical knowledge has come back to bite them hard from a business and financial perspective.
Regardless of the field endeavor, knowledge is a powerful tool. It can help you navigate the morass of so-called information spewing forth from "those in the know". For one client, taking the time to educate themselves has meant a sense of freedom from medically imposed restrictions and suddenly, by learning how to leverage technology properly, a world of possibilities has opened up before them.
This is powerful stuff and none of us can afford to be left behind. New technology is not a reason to be fearful, nor is it the work of the devil come to make our lives more difficult. It is merely the on-going application of the results of decades of research and development that are coming to fruition.
Ask yourself.... what are your feelings around technology? Why do you feel the way you do? These are important questions as the 21st Century will demand a higher and higher level of technical understanding from the individual business owner. You will eventually have to come to grips with the fact that running a business today requires the application of technology and if you are going to make smart business decisions, you have to have a frame of reference from which to make those decisions.

What does it all mean? IT and Technology in an Exponential World
Where we came from:
It is very often that as IT professionals we encounter end-users (many of them business owners) who are either technophobes or simply cannot bring themselves to be bothered with how technology impacts their daily lives or the health and longevity of their businesses.
There was a time in our society when people could take their own sweet time adopting new technologies as things did not change very often and when they did, they did so in very small increments, thus making it easier to get "caught up".
In the mid 1990's, the advent of the internet and all of its associated infrastructure brought about a level of technological acceleration, heretofore unmatched in human history. Once Logarithmic advances in technology rapidly began to turn exponential in nature.
This acceleration of technology brought with it a rapid decline in the cost of manufactured technology products, thus ushering in an era of increased adoption of new technologies by companies around the globe.
The curve had turned very steep indeed.
Where we are today:
In recent years, technology has gone from being a "nice-to-have" or novelty item to a requisite component in the formation, growth and success of any company. The problem here is that business owners (many of whom were used to being able to largely ignore technology and its inexorable march forward) are suddenly realizing that they are being rapidly left behind.
The resultant environment is that many business owners don't know what they don't know and most are afraid to make any move at all, as they don't understand the potential ramifications for their businesses if they do.
The question thus becomes, how do you keep/catch up? The only real solution to this problem is for business owners to proactively find reliable sources of information and education that they can leverage to their benefit, thus allowing them to make better, more informed strategic technological decisions for their companies.
Having said that, it is well known that the biggest complaint about most educational program regarding technology in business, assume you arrive with a certain level of knowledge and understanding and the teaching begins there.
The problem of-course is that most folks attending these classes are not anywhere near as informed/educated regarding technology as they should be and as such they leave the classes completely frustrated at the perceived waste of time, energy and money.
The educational gap, therefore, widens even more.
The Effects of the Educational Gap
The Educational Gap quickly becomes a self-feeding, recursive loop that begins to affect a given company at its very core. The effects of the Educational Gap are as follows:

The only way to really fix this problem, as a forward thinking, proactive business owner is as follows:
- Find a trusted resource (eg. IT company, Technology class provider, etc.)
- Ask lots of questions!
- Read everything you can get your hands on
- Ask more questions
- Ask the most important question: "What can this technology do for me and my business?"
- Join and start using Face Book and LinkedIn as a means of getting yourself and your company name out there.
